Be Aware! End of Summer means Many Motor Vehicle Accidents in Ontatrio

To all our readers across Ontario, the personal injury lawyers at Auger Hollingsworth wish you a safe end of summer and Labour Day weekend.

You may be surprised to learn that many serious motor vehicle accidents happen in August and over the last long weekend of the summer.  Whether it is speed, distracted driving, impaired driving or even just extra volume, we always see a significant uptick in cases that start with an accident in August. Please be extra cautious so you do not become part of these startling statistics.

What Do I Do If I Have A Car Accident?

Remember that if you do have an accident, your number one priority should be your personal safety and the personal safety of all involved.  Get out of harm’s way and make sure to contact emergency services (911).

Second, ensure that you and anyone in your care receives appropriate medical attention.

If you or someone else on the scene is able to do so, gather the other drivers’ personal information including name, driver’s license number, insurance information, license plate and address and phone number.

Again, if possible, secure photos of the vehicles involved before they are moved.

Be sure to get medical attention the same day as the accident if at all possible, paying close attention to possible head injury.

When Do I Call A Personal Injury Lawyer?

When it is safe to do so, and ideally after you have received medical attention, call Auger Hollingsworth to discuss your rights and obligations after an accident.  For people whose injuries meet our criteria, we offer a free, no obligation consultation to review how to maximise your access to accident benefits and how to achieve the best compensation available.

Who Cares about You After an Accident?

After an accident, you may wonder if it is really worth hiring a personal injury lawyer for your Ontario car accident or slip and fall accident.

Sometimes our personal injury law firm sees posts on social media ads for lawyers where viewers are– how shall we say– skeptical, about whether or not they will come out ahead if they hire a lawyer.

In this video, we explain how a personal injury lawyer can build your case so that the insurance company assessing your claim cannot ignore the impact of the accident on your life.  Our lead personal injury lawyer and founder, Brenda Hollingsworth, explains the difference between working with the insurance company directly and working with a lawyer.

After you watch the video, let us know if you have questions or want to set up a meeting.

August Long Weekend Can be Dangerous

Stay Safe During the Civic Holiday!

If you live in a place with heavy winters like we do in Ottawa, you would probably expect that most car accidents happen in the snowy icy months.  However, both statistics and our own experience tells us that August is the most brutal month of the year for serious collisions.

  • Is it speed?
  • Is it more people on the road?
  • Are people likely to drink or consume cannabis at this time of year?

The reasons are various but the results are clear.  August is dangerous on the roads.  Long weekends and Fridays are the worst.

Friends, please take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.  Please drive safely, watch for cyclists and pedestrians and take transit if you are partying.

Have a great long weekend from your friends at Auger Hollingsworth.  We are in your community and on your side.  Call our firm at 613 233-4529 if you need help or advice after a collision.

Cycling Deaths Lead to Calls for Increased Ottawa Bicycle Infrastructure

Two Ottawa cycling deaths this summer, combined with multiple Ottawa cycling injuries and countless close calls have left Ottawa bicycle enthusiasts spinning. If we accept that we are in a climate crisis (and how can we not?), surely we must do everything in our power as a City to promote and protect citizens who travel without fossil fuels. In a city as geographically large as Ottawa, cycling is one of the few no-emission options.

Some Improvements in Local Roads

The City of Ottawa has taken a number of strong steps to make cycling safer. The “complete streets” on Churchill Avenue and Main Street are good starts. However, aren’t they kind of complete streets to nowhere? More needs to be done so that cyclists can travel around the city safely on a consistent and integrated system of bikeways.

Consequences of Cycling Accidents

As personal injury lawyers, we see the aftermath of cycling collisions with motor vehicles on a daily basis. In fact, the firm’s first ever personal injury case was a dooring case. The three most common bicycle- motor vehicle collisions we see are:

* Dooring –> when a bike is struck by a door opened from a park car. This can happen on the driver or passenger side. Backseat passengers are also potential culprits.
* Right Hooks –> when a bike is going straight through an intersections and a right-turning vehicle t-bones them.
* Sideswipes –> when a vehicle passes the cyclist too closely on the right, striking the cyclist or running them off the road or both.

Cycling collisions can result in life threatening injuries and death. Cycling accidents can also cause fractures, chronic pain, concussion, road rash and lacerations. Many of our clients who are injured as cyclists suffer a loss of income and require health care services that are not covered by OHIP, such a physiotherapy.

How Auger Hollingsworth Can Help

At Auger Hollingsworth, we help injured cyclists by helping you access accident benefits and by pursuing compensation from the vehicle that struck you, typically by negotiating a settlement with their insurance company.
